Shanghai Expo mascot Haibao at Victoria Park

Hong Kong : 1 June , 2009 – The mascot of the World Exposition 2010 Shanghai China (Shanghai Expo) – Haibao (海寶) – which created from the Chinese character for “people (人)”, started display at Victoria Park now until 30 November, 2009.

The Shanghai Expo will be held in Shanghai from 1 May to October 31, 2010.

20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre

Hong Kong: 4 June 2009 – About 150,000 people fill up six football fields at Victoria Park attend the candlelight vigil to remember June fourth massacre in Beijing 20 year ago. However, Hong Kong Police estimated only have 62,800, their largest estimate for any vigil except the one in 1990, which they put at 80,000.

4 June,1989 People’s Liberation Army had killed civilians at Tiananmen square with troops and tanks, killing thousands to quell a “counterrevolutionary rebellion” or later called it the “1989 political storm” .

Xiong Yan was placed on the 21 most wanted protestors’ list also take part in Thursday night’s candlelight vigil.

Demonstration to Commemorate the 20th Anniversary of June 4th

HONG KONG : 31 May, 2009 – More than 8,000 protesters join the first of 2 events to mark of China’s crackdown on prodemocracy protesters at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square in 1989.

However, Police said only 4,700 started the march and that 4,150 reached Government Headquarters.

At the front were a group of 20 years old who were born in 1989.

Xiong Yan, who at one time was on the list of the 21 most wanted Tiananmen protesters. After two years in jail, he escaped to the West through Hong Kong was among the marchers.

A rally and a march will be held to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of June 4.

The rally and march will also reiterate the following pleas:

that dissidents be released from prison;
that the democratic movement of 1989 be vindicated;
that those who ordered the June 4 massacre be held accountable;
that one-party dictatorship be ended;
and that democracy be realized in China.

At 4 June, 2009, Candlelight Vigil event by Hong Kong Alliance In Support Of Patriotic Democratic will take part at Victoria Park.

Hong Kong Flower Show 2009

The Hong Kong Flower Show is a major event coordinated by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department to encourage gardening and the awareness of greening. Each year, it offers a good chance for hundreds of thousands of local citizens and gardening lovers all over the world to appreciate the beauty of flowers and share their experiences in the cultivation of flowers.

Hong Kong Flower Show 2009 will be held from 13 to 22 March 2009 at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay. The theme of this show is “Blossoming Welcome for the EAG” and its theme flower is “Cosmos”.

The event will showcase exquisite flowers from worldwide and a rich profusion of exotic potted plants, beautiful floral arrangements and gorgeous landscape displays by organizations from local, the Mainland and overseas. There will also be commercial stalls selling flowers and other horticultural products.

On the show time period, a rich diversity of educational and recreational fringe activities will also be organized for the enjoyment of visitors of all ages. They include student drawing competition, photo competition, exhibit competition, music and cultural performances, floral art demonstrations, plant maintenance workshops, green stalls, guided visits, recreation programmes and fun games.

Hong Kong July 1 marches 2008 (2008年七一遊行)

Hong Kong : 1 July, 2008 – More than 40,000 people have taken part in the march from Victoria Park to the Central Government Offices July 1, 2008 demanding the Universal Suffrage and Improve Social Welfare. Hong Kong Police estimated 15,500 people marched, while an independent survey by the University of Hong Kong estimated around at 17,000 to 19,000.

Goddess of Democracy

The Goddess of Democracy (民主女神)was a 10-meter-tall (33 ft) statue created during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. She had stood for only five days before being destroyed by soldiers of the People’s Liberation Army in the assault on Tiananmen that would end the Democracy Movement.

This is a replica erected at a vigil attended in Victoria Park, Hong Kong since June 4, 1996.

HONG KONG: 5 Aug, 2008 – Buddha’s Birthday Carnival (佛誕嘉年華) organised by Buddha’s Light International Association of Hong kong (國際佛光會香港協會) open at Victoria Park, Causeway Bay to celebrate the birthday of Lord Buddha.

According to legend, Prince Siddhatta who was then known as Shakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, was born in Lumbini Park, Kapilavatsu in Northern India on the 8th day of the fourth lunar month calendar.

At his birth nine dragons sprayed water to bathe the baby Buddha and seven lotus flowers sprung up beneath his feet as he walked – pointing one hand to the sky and ground, he said “in the heaven above and earth below, I vow to liberate all who suffer in these three realms (天上天下，唯我為尊)”.

Today, to commemorate the birth of the Buddha, the bather scoops up water from the ceremonial basin and carefully sprinkles water onto the head and shoulders of the baby Buddha statue, making sure that none spills out of the basin. This action also reminds people to use Buddhism’s teachings to cleanse their minds and bodies.

It has become a public holiday in Hong Kong since 1999.

Hong Kong: More than 250 Hong Kong people included members of the League of Social Democrats(Organizers Article23.net said more than 500 people attended) marched from Victoria Park to the Wan Chai Police headquarters to protest against the police’s handling of the obscene photo case involving local pop and film stars including Edison Chen Kwoon-hei(陳冠希), Gillian Chung Yan-tung (鍾欣桐), Bobo Chan Man-woon (陳文媛) and Cecilia Cheung Pak-zhi (張栢芝), implicated Edison’s current girlfriend Vincy Yeung (楊永晴). They accused the police of selective prosecution.
