Typhoon Nuri No. 9 Signal Issued

HONG KONG : 22 Aug., 2008 – The Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9, was issued at 1:40 pm by the Hong Kong Observatory.

This means that winds are expected to increase significantly as Nuri moves closer to Hong Kong.

At 2 p.m., Typhoon Nuri was centred about 40 kilometres east-southeast of Hong Kong Observatory (near 22.1 degrees north 114.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour towards Hong Kong.

Nuri is expected to cross Hong Kong in the next few hours. Gales are affecting many parts of the territory. Winds will increase further.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at Waglan Island, Tai Mei Tuk and Chek Lap Kok were 94, 78 and 76 kilometres per hour respectively.

Typhoon Nuri No. 8 Signal Issued

HONG KONG : 22 Aug., 2008 – The No. 8 Northwest Gale or Storm Signal was issued at 7:40 a.m. This means that winds with mean speeds of 63 kilometres per hour or more are expected from the northwest quarter.

At 8 a.m., Typhoon Nuri was centred about 160 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.4 degrees north 115.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour towards the Pearl River Estuary.

According to the present forecast track, Nuri will be rather close to Hong Kong this afternoon and tonight with a chance of direct hit. The Gale or Storm Signal No. 8 will be in force for most of the day.

HONG KONG – 22 Aug., 2008 – The Hong Kong Observatory announces that the Tropical
Cyclone Warning Signal Number 8 is expected to be issued at or before 8:00 a.m. today. Winds locally will strengthen further.

At 7 a.m., Typhoon Nuri was estimated to be about 170 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 21.4 degrees north 115.5 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour towards the Pearl River Estuary.

Typhoon Nuri

HONG KONG – 21 Aug., 2008 – Strong Wing Singal No. 3 was hosted at 8:40 pm by Hong Kong Observatory. Typhoon Nuri was estimated to be about 300 kilometres southeast of Hong Kong (near 20.6 degrees north 116.4 degrees east) and is forecast to move west-northwest at about 14 kilometres per hour in the general direction of coastal Guangdong.

Amber Rainstorm

The rainstorm warning signals (暴雨警告訊號) are a set of signals used in Hong Kong to alert the public about the occurrence of heavy rain which is likely to bring about major disruptions such as traffic congestion and floods. They also ensure a state of readiness within the essential services to deal with emergencies.

Hong Kong Observatory is responsible for launching these signals and the signals are broadcast over radio and television.

Amber Rainstorm Signal means:

Heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 30 millimetres in an hour, and is likely to continue.

The AMBER signal gives alert about potential heavy rain that may develop into RED or BLACK signal situations. There will be flooding in some low-lying areas and poorly drained areas.

Hong Kong: 3 June, 2008 – A trough of low pressure is bringing thundery showers to the south China coastal areas and the northern part of the South China Sea. Locally, thundery showers in the evening brought more than 30 millimetres of rainfall to most parts of Hong Kong.
