Hong Kong – 25 August, 2010 : The bodies of the 8 Hong Kong tourists who were killed, and 8 surviving tour group members, returned home from Manila tonight on a flight chartered by the Government. They were accompanied by 19 family members. The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, received the group at Hong Kong International Airport.
The Manila hostage crisis occurred when a dismissed Philippine National Police officer took over a tour bus in front of the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, Manila, Philippines on 23 August, 2010. Disgruntled former senior inspector Rolando Mendoza, from the Manila Police District (MPD) hijacked a tour bus carrying 25 tourists from Hong Kong in an attempt to get his job back. As a result of the ten-hour siege, the ensuing shootout, and a botched rescue attempt by MPD watched by millions on live television news, 8 of the hostages and Mendoza died and 9 other people were injured.
