Hong Kong – 31 August, 2009 : The 23 year old water 45-centimeter diameter water pipe has burst at around 07:00 am on Gloucester Road, leaving a huge crater in the road near Immigration Tower. It forcing the closure of the entire eastbound carriageway for most of the day. It is the fourth time this year the pipe has burst. The Water Supplies Department and Transport Department have been criticized for putting the renewal project on hold for four months. It was originally due to be completed in April this year.
Repair crews are working overnight in the hope of fully reopening Gloucester Road ahead of the morning rush hour.

According to Hong Kong Water Supplies Department, the section was checked by ultrasonic test on 15 August, 2009 and no problem was found. Also it has been included in water main replacement programme, which was plan to replace the sections of water pipe on eastbound Gloucester Road turning into Fleming Road before replacing the section across Gloucester Road. They will expedite the replacement and repair of eight sections of water mains across Gloucester Road, and send officers to the United States to inspect the latest technology in detecting leaks.
Gloucester Road reopened to traffic at around 4.30am 1 Sept, 2009 after emergency crews worked through the night to finish repairs in time for the morning rush hour.
